Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why hasn't the legislature already passed racino legislation?

A: Even though more than 70% of Minnesotans have consistently supported the racino concept, "politics as usual" has been trumping common sense at the Capitol for over a decade. Fortunately, racino legislation is centered as an important campaign issue in the upcoming elections and we're confident that legislators are starting to take notice.  2011 will be the year!

Q: Would we be breaking an agreement with Minnesota's Native Americans, taking away exclusive rights to casino gaming?

A: Minnesota's gaming compacts do not grant casino gaming exclusivity to the Native American communities. Many have been led to believe that the authorization of additional gaming facilities would break these agreements, but that's simply not true. The state would not break any pre-existing agreements if it decides to authorize non-tribal casino gaming.

Q: Is racino legislation an expansion of gambling?

A: No. a racino would utilize the same video and slot games already in use at Minnesota's 18 existing, and constantly expanding, tribal casinos. The games would be installed at Canterbury Park, where gambling already exists around the clock 365 days a year.

Q: How much money can a racino generate for the State of Minnesota?

A: The most recent studies estimate that racinos could generate at least $200 million in new revenue for the state during every two-year budget cycle.

Q: Where would that money go?

A: The tax revenue would be deposited in the state treasury.  It could be used for education, transportation, health care, public works, or helping reduce the budget deficit.

Q: Will the state help finance or subsidize development of racino?

A: No. Racino construction would be paid for in full by Canterbury Park.

Q: How many jobs would racino legislation create?

A: A racino would directly generate thousands of new jobs, during construction and once it's open. The $200 million generated in tax revenue could put people to work through the building of roads and bridges. Additionally, it could save the jobs of teachers or state workers who have been affected by state budget cuts.

Q: What has happened in other states that have racinos?

A: They are a proven model of success, resulting in a growth in tax revenues and jobs. Just look at the numbers!

Q: What impact would racinos have on the horse industry in Minnesota?

A: The passage of racinos would allow Minnesota racetracks to increase purses and spur significant growth in the size and quality the horse industry in the state.  A University of Minnesota study suggests that horse racing is the one of the best ways to substantially improve the economic impact of the entire horse industry within the state.

Q: Can I sign a petition to get racino legislation on the ballot?

A: In Minnesota, the public can't petition to put a question on the ballot. But you can contact your legislators to pass laws or authorize a constitutional amendment.

Q: How can I help the cause?

A: Make your voice heard! Contact your legislator, sign up as a supporter, and tell your friends. We'll keep you informed of everything going on during the upcoming elections and all of the news as we prepare for the 2011 legislative session.
